Keyword difficulty checker that explains every score

A difficulty number is only useful if you know what is behind it. SeoData scores each keyword from 0 to 100, explains the score in plain words and shows the ranking pages that produce it, so you can choose targets your site can actually reach.

A score you can read in one glance

Every keyword gets a difficulty score from 0 to 100 and a band that says what the number means for your work.

ScoreBandWhat it usually takes
0 to 14Very easyA focused page that answers the query well, few or no links
15 to 29EasyA solid page and a handful of relevant referring domains
30 to 49MediumStrong content, internal links and steady link building
50 to 69HardAn established domain and many quality referring domains
70 to 100Very hardTop authority, a large link profile and months of work

Next to the score SeoData writes a one-line explanation, for instance that the first page is held by large brands with deep link profiles, or that several ranking pages are weak and outdated.

The ranking pages behind the number

Open any keyword to see the pages in the top results, each with referring domains, estimated organic traffic, page type and how well the title matches the query. The score stops being a black box, because you see the exact competition you would face.

What drives keyword difficulty

  • Referring domains of the ranking pages. This is the strongest factor. Pages backed by many relevant domains are hard to displace.
  • Strength of the ranking domains. Big, established sites hold positions longer, even with average pages.
  • Content match. If the ranking pages answer the query only partly, a better page has an opening.
  • SERP features. Featured snippets, video blocks and local packs push organic results down and make the page harder to win.
  • Stability. Results that change often are easier to break into than results that stay the same for months.

SeoData builds the score from data supplied by licensed data partners and our own crawler that respects robots.txt.

How to pick keywords you can win

  1. Check your own domain first. The domain authority checker shows how strong your site is today.

  2. Set a difficulty ceiling that matches it. Newer sites start under 30, established sites can aim higher.

  3. Filter by intent so every target leads to a page that can convert.

  4. Look for weak spots in the ranking pages, such as outdated content or pages with few referring domains.

  5. Group close keywords into one cluster and plan one strong page per cluster.

Run this inside the full SEO keyword analysis module, where difficulty sits next to volume, intent and CPC.

Who relies on the score

In-house SEO leads use it to set realistic quarterly targets. Agencies use it to explain to a client why one keyword takes three months and another takes a year. Content managers use it to decide which brief goes to the writers first.

Keyword difficulty questions

Is a low score a guarantee of ranking?

No. The score measures the strength of the current competition. You still need a page that answers the query better than the pages that rank today.

Why does the score change over time?

Ranking pages gain and lose links, and new pages enter the results. SeoData recalculates difficulty as the results page changes, so the score reflects the current state.

Can I check difficulty for many keywords at once?

Yes. Paste a list of up to a thousand keywords and each one gets a score, a band and an explanation.
