How DataForSEO billing works
DataForSEO is an API only. Its pricing page says charges depend on the endpoint and may be based on tasks, returned results, rows or pages, so each product has its own price sheet. There are no seats, no plan tiers and no monthly fee. You add funds, make calls, and the balance goes down. The minimum top-up is 50 USD, and DataForSEO states it is not a subscription fee.
For an agency this has two effects. Small and uneven usage is cheap, because you never pay for capacity you do not use. And the monthly cost moves with every new client, every extra keyword and every refresh frequency you promise, so quoting a fixed retainer margin takes arithmetic you have to keep up to date.
Rates change. Confirm the endpoint price on dataforseo.com before you budget, the figures below were checked in October 2026.
DataForSEO backlinks API cost per request and per row
In live mode the Backlinks API charges 0.024 USD per request plus 0.000036 USD per row returned. The row part is small, so request size barely matters at first.
| Request | Rows returned | Cost per request |
|---|---|---|
| Domain summary only | 1 | about 0.024 USD |
| New links check | 50 | about 0.0258 USD |
| Link export | 1 000 | about 0.06 USD |
| Large export | 10 000 | about 0.384 USD |
Pulling a full 1 000 row link list for a client costs about six cents. Even a 10 000 row export stays under forty cents. This is why DataForSEO is the cheapest raw source of link data for teams that can handle the plumbing.
DataForSEO SERP API pricing for rank tracking
The SERP API starts at 0.0006 USD per result page, which is the entry rate on the pricing page. Priority and live options can cost more, so treat 0.0006 USD as the floor, not the guarantee. At that floor, 1 000 tracked keyword checks cost 0.60 USD.
Rank tracking is where usage-based billing can climb. The frequency you promise decides the bill, not the number of clients.
What 20 client dashboards cost on DataForSEO
Take an agency with 20 clients. Each dashboard shows 150 tracked keywords and the 50 newest or lost backlinks.
- Backlinks weekly: 20 clients x 4 refreshes = 80 requests of 50 rows, about 2.06 USD a month.
- Rank tracking weekly: 20 x 150 x 4 = 12 000 SERPs, about 7.20 USD a month at the floor rate.
- Rank tracking daily: 20 x 150 x 30 = 90 000 SERPs, about 54 USD a month at the floor rate.
So the data is somewhere between about 9 and 56 USD a month, and the first 50 USD top-up covers a month or more of weekly refreshes. That is cheap, and for a team with developers it is hard to argue with.
What the numbers leave out is everything around the data. Someone has to write the code that schedules the calls, stores the results, draws the charts, creates a client login, generates a PDF with your logo and handles a failed request on Monday morning. DataForSEO does not include any of this. Count the developer hours for the first build and the upkeep after it, and put them next to the monthly figures above.
When DataForSEO is the right choice
Choose DataForSEO when:
- you have developers and want to own the interface,
- your volume is large or uneven, for example millions of rows or seasonal spikes,
- you are building a product that resells or embeds SEO data,
- you need SERP endpoints in bulk and are comfortable monitoring balance and errors.
In those cases nothing on a subscription model will beat its per-request price.
When a flat plan costs less than DataForSEO
A flat plan wins when the people using the data are account managers, not engineers. SeoData Agency is 299 USD per month, or 149 USD per month on yearly billing. It includes 10 seats, white-label PDF reports and 100 000 API rows a month, plus the app for backlinks, keywords, positions and audits.
The same 20-client workload uses about 17 000 rows a month, under a fifth of the quota. The bill does not change when you add a client or refresh more often, up to the quota, and remaining rows come back in every response, so you can see the headroom. If you want a closer look at the plan and endpoints, the DataForSEO alternative page lays them out against the pay-as-you-go model, and the backlink API comparison prices the same workload across vendors.
There is a middle path. Some agencies keep a DataForSEO balance for bulk research and run client work in a workspace with reports built in. Others export link and keyword data into an analytics layer, and for that last step a plain-English query tool such as agentsql.com lets a non-technical account manager ask questions of the exported tables without writing SQL.
How to price your own workload before choosing
- List clients, tracked keywords per client and the refresh frequency you actually sell.
- Multiply by the rates above to get the raw data bill.
- Add the build time for dashboards, logins and PDFs, and the upkeep.
- Compare the total with a flat plan that already includes them. See all plan prices on SeoData pricing.
Do this with three real clients, not an average one. The comparison usually settles itself.
